Leader Spotlight: Marla Schulman
We’re excited to welcome our newest AIM board member, Marla Schulman! Marla has been a key leader in AIM for several years and has been very involved in our affordable housing and pre-K campaigns. As a former president and board member of B’nai Israel Congregation in Rockville, she helped create SEA Change, a network of synagogues organizing for equity and inclusion. On June 2nd, she will be receiving the Rev. Clark Lobenstine Interfaith Bridge Builders Award.
In Marla’s own words:
“I enjoy being part of AIM because it gives me the chance to work in partnership and build relationships with people from all different parts of Montgomery County, across different faiths, races, ethnicities, cultures, and socioeconomic levels. It is incredibly inspiring to help build the world I want to live in, together with the people I’m living in it with.
Also, the principles of relational organizing can be applied so well to other leadership roles I hold. For example, listening to what people need rather than telling them. Coming up together with the issues that are of paramount importance and tackling them as a group. We may not agree on everything, but we can find those things we can work on together to better our community. Lastly, I’ve served in many leadership roles, but I’ve never been part of a collective leadership model like AIM’s and I have found learning about this model so rewarding and impactful.”
